about

Mostly formless experiments in allowing tools to play the equal role of collaborators rather than subservient role of simple instruments. I wanted to be surprised by my own work, which is nearly impossible when you're in control of every aspect, so I ceded as much control as I could to processes, processes like the smear of analog tape bounced to another track at double speed, sine waves modulating each other, an algorithm scanning its way across an audio file in unexpected ways, the summing of a binary counter, the output of a 1-dimensional cellular automata, etcetera. I found this way of working very rewarding and ended up with three distinct discs worth of material:

Disc 1: In (tracks 1-7) - ambient/drone pieces. No rhythm, all atmosphere. A few tracks were originally recorded on tape and brought into the digital realm to process further.

Disc 2: Out (tracks 8-16) - "dance" pieces. Features heavily deconstructed versions of the July singles. The most rhythmically-oriented of the three discs, although the rhythms that are present are often irregular and more of a textural element than anything else.

Disc 3: Through (tracks 17-25) - improvisatory pieces on stringed instruments. Some were played through effects/processing, others were played and then processed further, a few were a little bit of both, but all of the tracks on this disc are, at their core, guitar/bass improvisations played straight through in one take.

All of these tracks were composed/played/recorded, if my memory is correct, from late February to early July, although some self-recorded samples date as far back as February of 2016.
